"English for Law" aims to: (1) improve students’ skills in reading and understanding legal texts or texts on legal issues; (2) strengthen their knowledge and command of the features of legal English; (3) activate and expand their legal vocabulary and (4) improve their grammar skills (in particular grammar issues specific to legal English).
Students will practise legal English skills, ranging from reading to grammar, vocabulary building or writing (e.g. in the final assignment).
Students are expected to have at the very least a B1+/B2 level of English (CEFRL, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
The difficulties and intricate nature of the grammar of legal English requires students to have a very good command of English, as legal English (in addition to specialised terminology) has specific features that are very complex, such as the subjunctive, inversion, archaisms, noun compounds, subordination, etc.
Students must consult the online course on a regular basis to be informed of deadlines, notices, etc.

Rosa Bautista holds a Ph.D. in NortnAmerican Literature and a B.A. in English Philology. She is a lecturer in legal translation (and other specialist areas of translation) at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She is also a sworn translator/interpreter appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation with over 20 years' experience. She has taught at the Graduate Programme in Legal Translation at the Universidad Complutense, and has been part of the teaching team of the Seminar of Comparative Study on European Legal Systems and International Judicial Cooperation through Legal Language, for judges and magistrates of the European Union, organised yearly by the Training Department of the Spanish Council of the Judiciary and the European Studies Forum. She has been involved in several funded research projects and is the author of various publications related to legal language and translation.

COMPETENCIAS BÁSICAS Y GENERALES:
CG01 - Saber resolver problemas en entornos multidisciplinares relativos a la Unión Europea.
CG02 - Saber comunicar ideas y opiniones basadas en conocimientos específicos y avanzados sobre Unión Europea y emitir juicios razonados sobre las mismas.
CG03 - Interpretar el contenido de los textos y documentos de la Unión Europea de forma que el alumno sea capaz de adoptar decisiones y formular opciones sobre ellos en el entorno complejo de la estructura y ordenamiento de la Unión Europea.

COMPETENCIAS ESPECÍFICAS:
CE01 - Trabajar en contextos multidisciplinares que son los propios del ámbito de la Unión Europea y resolver problemas en dicho ámbito.
CE02 - Dominar los instrumentos de regulación y ordenación de la Unión Europea en contextos profesionales y académicos.
CE03 - Identificar normas y documentos dentro del sistema jurídico-político resultante de la integración de los ordenamientos jurídicos de los Estados Miembros y de la Unión Europea
CE04 - Encontrar, analizar y aplicar la legislación emanada de las diferentes instituciones y órganos de la Unión Europea, así como la de los Estados Miembros que se refiera o esté implicada en el sistema europeo.
CE05 - Encontrar, analizar y aplicar la jurisprudencia de los Tribunales que componen la jurisdicción de la Unión Europea así como la jurisprudencia de cualquier orden y nivel de los estados miembros que se refiera o que estén implicadas con el sistema de la Unión Europea.
Students who successfully complete this course will:
- Enhance their knowledge, comprehension and command of legal English.
- Improve their skills in reading, writing (e.g. final assignment) and understanding legal texts or texts on legal issues in English.
- Become acquainted with and be able to identify the main features of legal English as against general English.
- Achieve a reasonable command of legal English vocabulary in several areas, such as civil law, criminal law, EU cooperation in civil and criminal matters, etc.
Unit 1: An introduction to legal English and the European Union
This unit introduces the peculiarity of the grammatical features of legal English. Additionally, it covers practice of some of these features with exercises.
It also includes an introduction to the European Union.
Unit 2: Legal vocabulary in English in the European Union
This unit explains the sources of legal vocabulary in English in the European Union. It also includes practice with exercises at the level of the European Union (in particular, cross-border cooperation in civil and criminal matters).
Unit 3: International contracts
This unit includes legal terminology related to contracts, as well as exercises.
Unit 4: International organisations and other areas of the law
This unit explains and describes some international organisations. In addition, it includes practice with other areas of the law.
The distance learning methodology at UNED offers, among other things, flexibility for students to organise their time, which means that they can work with the materials at their own pace. Assignments, however, have submission deadlines that students must meet.
Students will have learning activities, materials and exercises on the online course and they can seek the assistance of the "Equipo Docente" through the forums in the course.
Legal English vocabulary & grammar will be introduced through the exploration and exploitation of legal topics. This will include legal texts, presentations, vocabulary and grammar exercises, etc. A whole range of materials and resources will be used.
Active involvement in the online course is strongly encouraged and recommended. Students must check messages on the online course ("Foros") regularly to have updated information on deadlines, notices, etc.

There will be two assignments: the first one (A1, or PEC no presencial) is optional and the second one (A2, trabajo final no presencial) is obligatory.
The first assignment (voluntary) will account for 20% of the final mark if students choose to submit it, in which case the final assignment (obligatory) will account for 80% of the final mark for those students who have chosen to do the first assignment. For students who have chosen to do only the second assignment (A2), it will account for 100% of the final mark. Students will be provided with the instructions with sufficient time and notice on the on-line course and must follow them accordingly.

¿Cómo se obtiene la nota final?
|
There will be two assignments: the first one (A1) is optional and the second one (A2) is obligatory. These assignments will count as follows:
1. The first assignment (A1), which is optional, will account for 20% of the final mark if submitted. In this case, the second assignment (A2) will account for 80% of the final mark. All students who choose to do the first assignment must submit it within the specified deadline before the February sitting.
2. The second assignment (A2) will account for 100% if students choose not to do the first optional assignment.
For September there will be a different final obligatory assignment (A2), so students must get in touch with Eva Samaniego or Montserrat Bermúdez by mid-June directly by e-mail (esamaniego@flog.uned.es; mbermudez@flog.uned.es) to request it.
The final mark if both A1 and A2 are submitted is obtained by carrying out the following operation:
A1 x 0.2 (20%) = y A2 x 0.8 (80%) = z Final mark= y + z
If only A2 is submitted, then the mark obtained in it will be the final mark.
