GRUPO DE METIS

METIS is a philosophy research group based at UNED, in Madrid. Our name comes from a Greek word meaning ‘argumentative cunning, wisdom, skill, craft’.

The group was founded in 2009 and includes professors and graduate students of the Department of Logic, History, and Philosophy of Science, as well as other associated academics. We work in analytic philosophy and our main areas of specialisation are philosophy of science and philosophy of language. Some of our members are also active in logic, epistemology, animal cognition, and the philosophy of art. You can check out our current research projects here.

Work of METIS members has appeared in prestigious venues like Noûs, Journal of Philosophy, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, British Journal for Philosophy of Science, and Philosophical Quarterly. Our members are or have been editors of journals such as European Journal for Philosophy of Science, History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences, British Journal of Aesthetics, and Theoria. We also engage in outreach, having published in venues like Aeon and The Conversation, and regularly appearing in international news outlets and podcasts.

Members of METIS teach in the Masters in Theoretical and Practical Philosophy at UNED. We also collaborate in the doctoral programme of the Philosophy Faculty, which has seen 29 PhD theses defended under our supervision.

Since 2009 we organise a recurring seminar that has hosted talks by more than 400 speakers.
