ACADEMIC POSITIONS

In relation to teaching experience, he has taught, since the 2014/15 academic year (initially as a Guest Lecturer, in several universities, before joining the UNED full-time in 2019), in various undergraduate and MSc degree subjects - in the area of ​​Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering and in the area of ​​Manufacturing Process Engineering, thus - their teaching activity is aligned with their interests in research and transfer, as well as with their professional experience in the industry.

As mentioned above, in addition to his experience at UNED, he has taught - as a Guest Lecturer - at the Undergraduate, MSc, Specialization Seminars and Advanced Research Works Supervision levels at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, King Juan Carlos University of Madrid, Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II and the Università del Salento (Italy).

Before joining as a Professor, he was first an Honorary Fellow under RD 1239/2011 and Lecturer-Tutor of the Associated Center of the UNED in Madrid, combining this occupation with an intense professional activity, within the private company, in the field of Materials Technology and Industrial Manufacturing.

Currently, he is an Associate Professor carrying out his teaching and research activities within the Department of Construction and Manufacturing Engineering of the UNED.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

A) GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Lecturer of the Doctoral Program in Industrial Technologies of the UNED Doctoral School and Researcher in the consolidated Research Group "Industrial Production and Manufacturing Engineering(Industrial Production and Manufacturing Engineering - IPME)” from UNED.

He has published numerous research articles in prestigious international journals and has supervised two Doctoral Dissertations (one of them recognized with the UNED Extraordinary Doctorate Award, in the area of ​​Engineering, during the 2020/21 academic year) and a large number of MSc Research works.

Its research activity focuses on the field of Materials and Manufacturing Engineering, from an approach that seeks to guarantee reliability, safety and efficiency in sustainable industrial applications, on the path of transition towards a zero-emissions industry.

B) RESEARCH LINE

Its line of work is aimed at optimizing the balance betweenIntrinsic properties<>Processability<>In-service-behaviorof Materials - intended for the Manufacture of components and/or industrial equipment - through the development and application of methodologies based on analytical, numerical and/or experimental techniques, with the purpose of generating innovation around the following 3 main axes (MA) , which also revolve around Design and Manufacturing (MA1), Service Behavior (MA2) and Asset Management (MA3):

MA1.- Optimization of Material Selection and Manufacturing parameters, improvement of dimensional precision and evaluation of damage induced in advanced Materials processing

MA2.- Prognosis of Degradation and Failure‒ and analysis of Performance and Durability ‒ of mechanical components under extreme service conditions

MA3.- Evaluation of the impact of Mechanical Integrity Management and Asset Reliability on the safety and sustainability of industrial facilities and infrastructures.

As a consequence of the research carried out, collaborations have been established (and as a result joint JCR publications) with several international research centers and universities: Argonne National Laboratory (USA), Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (Italy), Instituto Superior Técnico -Universidade de Lisboa, University of Delaware, Università di Genova or Universitá del Salento. The research carried out has also led to collaboration (and as a result JCR publications) with institutions such as the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) and international companies such as SGS Tecnos, Apollo Plus GbmH and the Machinery and Reliability Institute LLC (MRI), USA.

Additionally, in addition to these international companies, several of these research centers and universities participate or have participated in research projects, several of them led as IP by Álvaro Rodríguez Prieto. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE IN PRIVATE COMPANIES AND KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER

A) PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE IN THE PRIVATE INDUSTRY

Since 2007, it has combined research, first, with intense professional work, and then with research and innovation tasks transferred to the industry, as well as R&D&I management tasks, linked to the activity carried out by the multinational. Swiss SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance). These occupations have focused mainly on the field of Supervision of manufacturing of industrial equipment, as well as in the Supervision of Operation and Maintenance and Technical Consulting (Operability, Reliability and Qualification of materials and components) for the electric power generation sector (especially the nuclear industry) and the Oil&Gas sector.

In this way, he has supervised (both nationally and internationally) the manufacturing and functional testing of numerous industrial equipment. Likewise, he has led numerous technical advisory projects related to the evaluation of the mechanical integrity, suitability for service and useful life of industrial assets and infrastructure.

Between 2007 and 2008, he trained professionally in various engineering specialties, deepening industrial knowledge in relation to the supervision of the design, construction and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure. Likewise, in that period he was Inspector of Welded Joints in several Design Modifications carried out at the LONZA plant in Porriño (Pontevedra) and worked carrying out Regulatory Inspections in the context of the Authorized Control Body of the Ministry of Industry and in the Materials Laboratory , carrying out mechanical testing and microstructural characterization for numerous clients in the industrial, energy and aeronautical sectors. In 2009, he worked as an Industrial Safety Inspector and also carried out the work of Head of Mechanical Inspection in the "NOx reduction project" of the Andorra Thermal Power Plant (ENDESA).

Between 2010 and 2014, he carried out internationally (in France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Holland; some residency periods of several months) numerous inspections and qualifications of important electromechanical equipment (4th Diesel Generator of the Almaraz NPP or Energy Analyzer). Boron for CN Trillo, among many others) and the monitoring of the Engineering, Purchasing and Construction (EPC) process of the first Thermal Power Plants in Spain (Gemasolar-Tower with Heliostats and Valley 1-2-Parabolic Cylinder). In that same period, he was also Mechanical Supervisor and Resident Engineer at the Trillo Nuclear Power Plant, being - between 2012 and 2014 - the Coordinator of the Materials and Components qualification processes and previously Coordinator of Inspection of Mechanical Design Modifications (some arising based on the guidelines following the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant); also carrying out research on the impact of KTA manufacturing codes on mechanical maintenance procedures and developing materials testing procedures for critical assets of the plant.

From 2014 to 2019, he was first Responsible for Component Qualification and Engineering (Dedication of Commercial Grade Components and seismic-environmental qualification) and then Responsible for the contracts and services of Maintenance and Quality Assurance of the Almaraz and Trillo Power Plants, as well as Responsible of the development of services and business in the field of Mechanical Integrity and Asset Reliability, together with the management of the R&D&i generated in said projects.

B) LEADERSHIP IN THE TRANSFER OF RESEARCH RESULTS TO THE INDUSTRY

Currently, he coordinates the Innovation and Transfer Group "Advanced failure prognosis in industrial applications" - promoted by the UNED Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI) - through which various Results Transfer activities are promoted. of Research towards the industrial environment.

He has led and, on the other hand, also evaluated research projects within the company, with a view to the certification of R&D&I tasks according to the requirements set out in art. 35 “Deduction for research and development activities and technological innovation” of the corporate tax law (RDL 4/2004, law 27/2014 and updates).

In September 2023 he was elected Founding Member and Executive Committee Member of the Spanish section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Also, since September 2023, he is Member of the Steering Committee of the Industry Advisory Board from the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM).

Has published numerous articles, by invitation, in magazines such as Metal Industria, Industria Química, Nuclear España, Revista de Mantenimiento or DYNA Management. Likewise, he has communicated the results of his research at numerous industrial conferences such as the International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE), the Manufacturing Science & Engineering Conference (MSEC). or the Pressure Vessel and Piping Conference (PVP) organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Additive Manufacturing Benchmarks organized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) or the International Conference on Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (SMIRT ), as well as the Annual Meetings of the Spanish Nuclear Society and the Reliability Conferences organized by the Spanish Maintenance Association.

CONFERENCES FOR THE PROMOTION OF SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY AND INNOVATION

- Speaker at II Conference on Technological, Industrial and Mining Heritage held on November 2 and 3, 2021, organized by the General Directorate of Universities and Research of the Community of Madrid, within the framework of the XXI Science and Innovation Week that took place from November 1 to 14, 2021. Title of the presentation: “Historical analysis of the technological evolution of material requirements for the manufacture of nuclear reactor vessels.”

    RESEARCH STAYS IN INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CENTERS

    Between 2018 and 2019 he participated as Guest Researcher (Visiting Scholar) in several (3) projects framed along the lines "advanced manufacturing" and "materials for extreme environments", within the Applied Materials Division (AMD) of Argonne National Laboratory (USA).

    As a result of the research limited to that stage, several (4) publications were made in scientific journals with impact factor and several communications at international conferences in collaboration with researchers from Argonne National Laboratory, Northwestern University and IST-Lisbon.

    AWARDS RELATED TO HIS RESEARCH

    1. In the context of his stay as Guest Faculty Researcher at Argonne National Laboratory, he received the Iberquimia "Digital" Award 2018,- awarded by theBusiness Federation of the Spanish Chemical Industry (FEIQUE) and the Spanish Association for Digitalization (DigitalES)-in the category of best scientific-technical article published in the Revista Industria Química, for his work on "Selection of Materials for Additive Manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0".
    2. Likewise, in 2019 he received the Award for Best Presentation in the "Materials Technology" section, from the 44th Annual Meeting of the Spanish Nuclear Society (SNE), for their applied industrial research work on "Reverse Engineering and Advanced Materials Characterization" to mitigate obsolescence in the nuclear sector.
    3. He has also been awarded in the UNED "Young Talents 2021" call, sponsored by Banco Santander, to develop (as Principal Investigator) his project proposal on "Prognosis of the behavior of materials and mechanical equipment through the use of advanced analytics of data".
    4. On the other hand, his Doctoral Dissertation (defended in July 2014) obtained recognition from the Spanish Nuclear Safety Council and the Almaraz and Trillo Nuclear Power Plants, given its industrial interest and its applicability for a better evaluation of the mechanical integrity of materials, components and equipment, resulting in an improvement in the safety of the facilities.

The objective of this research work is to be able to carry out testing and laboratory practices by telematic means to the student, who has the option of carrying them out in their own home and at the time that best suits them, as long as they have the appropriate computer equipment, or in person at the corresponding Associated Center, which must have the necessary VR equipment and software that we develop in this work.
