Research activity

The research work has focused on the area of CC Computing and Artificial Intelligence, especially in knowledge engineering, knowledge-based systems, in diagnostic and planning tasks, with applications in security and surveillance, medicine, semantic representation, and in the modeling and semantic recognition of human behavior. I have published research articles in different international journals related to these topics, as well as in the main international conferences.
The thesis, directed by D. José Mira Mira and read in 2000, "Knowledge modeling and
reduction based on systems theory: Applications to medical diagnosis" marks the first line of research work, modeling-oriented knowledge engineering of reusable components following the inspiration of systems theory, and its application in the modeling and development of knowledge-based medical tasks. This line of work derives from the first national projects in which I have collaborated, the TAO-E projects (Implementation, evaluation and refinement of an oncology counseling system, TIC-92/0136) and DIAGEN (An environment for the reduction to the symbolic and connectionist levels of generic models of medical knowledge in diagnosis and therapy planning (TIC-97-0604). Particularly the latter, with a significant participation in the
modeling of medical knowledge in different specialties and tasks.
More recently projects AVISA and AVISA-2 focused (and derives the work of the thesis in knowledge engineering) in modeling for the recognition of alarming behaviors in video surveillance. The results of these projects have been described in TFMs and doctoral theses, as well as in publications in high-impact international journals.
All the work done in knowledge modelling has led to conceptual and technical work in ontology and linked-data modelling, the results of which are also shown in articles, master's theses and doctoral dissertations.
Lately, my work has focused on the convenience and opportunity of applying AI and robotics techniques to improve the care of children with ASD and the neuopsychological assessment of elderly people.
