Ph.D. about artificial intelligence in medicine. UNED, Madrid, 1994.
Title of the thesis: A Bayesian Expert System for Echocardiography.
Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado (doctoral prize), School of Science, UNED.
Fundesco Prize for Doctoral Dissertations, publicly delivered by the Spanish Minister for Education and Science in June 1995.

Full professor at the Dept. of Artificial Intelligence, UNED, since 2018.

Research activity

 

Principal investigator in six national projects about artificial intelligence for medicine, since 1997. Topics: nasopharyngeal cancer, prostate diseases, lung cancer, cochlear implants, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, etc.

Principal investigator at UNED in four international projects:
• A project funded by NATO, in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh and the Polish Academy of Sciences. 2000-2022. Topic: building an AI model for liver diseases.
• A project funded by the European Union (EU) and Mexico, in collaboration with universities and agencies from Canada, France, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom, and The Netherlands; 2009-2011. The group at UNED performed a cost-effectiveness analysis of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
• Two EU projects in collaboration with companies and universities of Belgium, Germany, and The Netherlands; 2010-2012 and 2013-2017. The UNED group contributed to building a model for programming cochlear implants.

Associate researcher in MACbioIDi2, an EU project for transferring biomedical technology and medical artificial intelligence to low-income countries; participants from USA (Harvard School of Public Health, Brigham and Women's Hospital), Canada, Spain, Portugal, Cape Verde, Mauritania, and Senegal. 2021-2024.
