Academic Information

MSc in Energy Engineering, and PhD in Nuclear Engineering, both degrees at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

Academic positions held

I am Associate Professor (civil servant) since 2021, in the field of Nuclear Engineering, which is part of the Energy Engineering Department of UNED. I was first hired at UNED as an Assistant Lecturer in 1999, in Teaching Unit of Thermal Engines. I changed Teaching Unit to Nuclear Engineering in 2002, where I held different positions to the current one. All my teaching experience has been carried out in the Industrial Engineering Faculty of UNED.

Research activity

I started my research activities in the Nuclear Fusion Institute of the Universidad Politécnica de Madird, and they were initially focused on developing new capabilities to a fluiddynamic code in order to better simulate the implosion process for Inertial Confinement Fusion. After finishing my PhD, I worked two years in Finland thanks to an postdoctoral Intraeuropean Fellowship granted by EURATOM. My career continued in computational developments, but at that moment oriented to the simulation of magnetic fusion plasmas.
After that period, I came back to my previous jobs in Spain, and joined a new research group in my department. This group, of which I am cofounder, has always been devoted to computational nuclear analyses of facilities related to nuclear fusion, that is, reactors and particle accelerators. I am proud to state that this group, which started with three fellow professors, has grown to 14 people, and has reached the highest scientific level in the field, with participation in international projects like ITER and IFMIF.
My main task during this last period has been to lead a team of researchers in providing nuclear analyses for accelerator based facilities. I have gained much experience in the whole process: from validation of nuclear data to generating own variance reduction techniques to provide analyses in the most accurate manner.

Professional experience

I have taken part of research contracts financed by private companies and international organizations, all in the field of safe handling and operation with radiation fields. These works have been conducted under strict quality controls and industry standards.

Educational management experience

From 2011 to 2017 I was appointed academic secretary and later coordinator of the Master on Industry Technologies of UNED. This master involved all departments of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and gave me the chance to get in touch with most teaching groups.
