Academic Information

Ariane Varela Braga is an art and architecture historian and Ramon y Cajal Research Fellow at the Department of Art History of the UNED in Madrid. She holds a PhD in art history from the University of Neuchâtel and an Italian habilitation (Abilitazione scientifica nazionale) as Associate Professor for architectural history. She has taught at the universities of Zurich (2014-2019) and Geneva (2019-2020), and has been Visiting professor at the Università degli Studi di Milano in 2022. She is associate researcher at HISTARA/EPHE, and the Latin American Center in Zurich. Prior to joining the UNED, she was a fellow at the Académie de France in Rome - Villa Médicis
(2022-2023).
She was awarded competitive grants and fellowships from the the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (Bibliotheca Hertziana), the Institut National d’histoire de l’art, Paris, the Universities of Neuchâtel and Zurich, the Swiss Institute in Rome, the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art, and the Swiss National Science Foundation, among
others. In 2023, she was awarded a Ramón and Cajal Fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Science and joined the Departement of Art History of the UNED. Her research lies at the crossroads of art history, architecture and material culture. She is the author of numerous articles and volumes on the theory of ornament in the 19th century, architectural orientalism and polychrome marble. She has also worked on various exhibitions, notably at the TU in Berlin, the Vitromusée Romont and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC USP) in São Paulo (Brazil).
