Introduction and Academic Career

Rocío Ortuño Casanova is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Spanish Literature and Literary Theory and since January 2024 is director of the Laboratory for Innovation and Digital Humanities at the UNED (LINHD).

She completed her DEA in Hispanic Literary Studies at the University of Salamanca with a scholarship for quality doctoral programmes and received her PhD from the University of Manchester (UK) in 2010 with a thesis on biblical intertextuality in the Generation of '27, which includes forgotten women writers of this generation, for which she has been invited to collaborate in collective volumes on this topic (2020, 2022).

In 2012 she became interested in Filipino literature in Spanish. She published an article on the tributes to the Generation of '27 in the poetry of the Filipino writer Federico Espino Licsi and proposed a project to build a Portal of Filipino literature in Spanish, for which she was awarded a two-month stay at the University of the Philippines in Baguio and a grant from the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library.

After six years working in the UK at the universities of Manchester, Aston and Salford, in 2013 he started working at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.

In 2014 he published the book, Mitos cristianos en la poesía del 27 and the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library portal was launched. She stayed at the University of the Philippines until 2016 while receiving training in Digital Humanities at the UNED. There, she continued her work of making Hispanic-Filipino literature visible and inserting it in Hispanic literatures with the publication of articles such as "Cultural Ambassadors: reception and significance of Gerardo Diego's trip to the Philippines in the Asian archipelago" (2018) for which he received the International Publication Award from the University of the Philippines.

In 2017 he moved to the Department of Literature at the University of Antwerp, where he directed four successful competitive projects, four PhDs still in progress and six dissertations. One of these projects was DigiPhiLit, an Erasmus+ Strategic Knowledge Partnerships project that sought to alleviate the absence of Hispanic-Philippine literature in European university curricula through the digitisation of works, the preparation of data-driven introductory materials created using digital methodologies, and the creation of a MOOC on this topic.

In Antwerp, she was also part of the organising committee of four international conferences and symposia, led two of these committees, and organised four Digital Humanities courses in collaboration with different universities, including UNED.

Before starting to work at UNED, she spent 18 months at the University of Alcalá with a María Zambrano contract for the attraction of international talent (NextGenerationEU funds) as a stay thanks to a 90% leave of absence from her teaching post at the University of Antwerp. There she was co-founder and co-coordinator of the Platform for Digital Humanities and Language Technologies of this university.

She has also participated as a guest lecturer in summer schools on Hispanic-Filipino literature at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (2021) and Université Paris Nanterre (2022), on literature and music at the UNED (2018 and 2023) and on literatures on the margins of global Hispanophony in Antwerp in 2023.

In the last five years (2018-2023) he has published 22 articles and book chapters, coordinated two monographic issues in academic journals (452ºF and Kritika Kultura), and with Axel Gasquet has edited two monographic volumes addressing two aspects of Hispanic-Filipino literature: modernity and transnational vocation, one with Brill entitled El desafío de la modernidad en la literatura hispanofilipina (2022) and another with Michigan University Press entitled Transnational Philippines (2024), in open access. He has also coordinated a volume of Introduction to Hispanic-Filipino Literature for Routledge (in press) and with UNED professor Clara Martínez-Cantón and Antonio Huertas of the URJC, he has edited another on Digital Humanities in the Teaching of Literature in Spanish (in press, Peter Lang).

He is a representative of the UNED in the Digital Humanities and Spanish Technologies cluster of the Community of Madrid and in CLARIAH.ES. She is a member of the Bibliodata working group of DARIAH. She has created the Filiteratura database and has been the coordinator of an online exhibition on Philippine press.

Research interest

My lines of research focus on

  • 20th century Spanish poetry, on which I did my doctoral thesis, with a special emphasis on the intersection between poetry and music, a subject on which I have participated in two research projects.
  • Literary and cultural exchanges between the Philippines and Spanish-speaking countries, and in general between Asia and Spanish-speaking cultures. I have worked on colonial texts from a postcolonial critical and decolonial perspective. On this topic I have directed several projects and I develop them in the research groups GILCO (U. Alcalá) and ALTER (UOC).
  • I have an interest in the use of digital methodologies in Humanities research, which I have developed in the ACDC group (U. Antwerpen) and as Principal Investigator of the PhilPeriodicals and DigiPhiLit projects. This has led me to head the Digital Humanities Lab at UNED since January 2024.
