Academic Information

Eva Estebas Vilaplana holds a PhD in Phonetics (2000) and an MA in Phonetics (1996) from University College London. In 1955 she completed an MA in English Philology at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She holds a BA in Spanish Philology (1993) and a BA in English Philology (1992) from Universitat Autònoma de Bacerlona.

Academic positions held

Eva Estebas Vilaplana is an Associate Professor in the Departament of Filologías Extranjeras y sus Lingüísticas at UNED. She teaches English Phonetics and Phonology in the Degree in English Studies, in the Degree in Tourism and in the MA in English Applied Linguistics. Previously, she taught English Phonetics and Phonology in the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics at University College London (1997-2001) and in the Departament of Filologia Anglesa i Germanística at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (1992-1993). Between 2009-2016 she was a lecturer of the Official Postgraduate Program on Estudios Fónicos organized by CSIC and Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo.

Research activity

Her research focuses on the phonetic and phonological analyses of English, Spanish and Catalan intonation. She has collaborated in the development of the Sp_ToBI system for prosodic labelling and has created computer-assisted pronunciation training materials. She has participated in many national and international research projects.

-New technologies applied to English phonetics teaching and learning

Professional experience

Eva Estebas Vilaplana has worked as a Lecturer on English Phonetics and Phonology at many universities and research centres (UNED, University College London, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, CSIC and Universidad Menéndez Pelayo). She has taught Spanish at UCL Language Centre, and English at Centro Superior de Idiomas Modernos (Universidad Complutense) and Centro Universitario de Idiomas a Distancia (UNED). She has worked as a voice analyst in the 20/20 Speech Limited project for NXT/QinetiQ at the UK.

Educational management experience

Eva Estebas Vilaplana was Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Planning at UNED (2014-2016) and Coordinator of the Degree in English Studies at UNED (2011-2014).
