Academic Information

Alfonso Lombana Sánchez (Madrid, 1986) is a researcher, translator, and expert in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. After studying Germanic Philology (2004-2009) and obtaining a qualification as a Teacher for German as a foreign language (2009), he obtained his Ph.D. with a thesis on the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and its literature as a model for the European Union (2015). This work received the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize of the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain (2015). 
Additionally, he has completed other training programs, among others, on blended learning teaching, new technologies in teaching and self-evaluation (Docentia).

Research activity

Alfonso is the author of several books, book chapters and research articles. He has also participated in prestigious research projects and international teaching teams across Europe. He has edited and translated several authors, as well as presented papers at conferences for more than fifteen different institutions in Spain, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Slovenia. 
Over the past decade, his research has focused on textual criticism and Central European German and Latin literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, particularly in Central Europe. His additional research interests include the writings of composer Richard Wagner and the legacy of Ferdinand Columbus.

 

Professional experience

From 2015 to 2021, he worked in Germany as a researcher, teacher and translator for his own company. 
Between 2022 and 2025, he led the European research project FLOR-JP “The florilegia and Janus Pannonius in Ferdinand Columbus' legacy: cultural transmission and literary durability in Seville” (Marie Skłodowska-Curie/Horizon2020). 
Since 2025, he has been working at UNED (National Distance Education University, Spain).
